  • About

The Lexington Woman’s Club is a community service organization out to make living in Rockbridge County even better. We are part of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC), and our roots trace back to 1868, when a pioneering American journalist named Jane Croly aka “Jenny June” was denied admittance to a Men’s Club in New York City to hear British author Charles Dickens speak
    during his US tour.

In response, Jane Croly formed her own club for women called Sorosis and was instrumental in
calling for women’s clubs across the country to unite some two decades later. The General
Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) was born and is now present in all 50 states and a
    dozen foreign countries.

Everything we do is focused on serving our community as we share our time, talent, and
experience, and have FUN getting to know each other and our neighbors.
Our members meet once a month and host speakers on a range of topics. We are governed by
an elected Board of Directors and organized by committees working on Arts and Culture, Civic
Engagement, Education and Libraries, the Environment, and Health and Wellness.

Our motto is “Unity through Diversity,” and we love welcoming new members with fresh ideas to
share. Whether you are new to these parts, a retiree, a business owner or a working Mom, there
is a place for you at LWC.
